What To Do If A Window Breaks In A Storm

Many people find storms frightening, and this is for good reason. There is the potential for a lot of harm and damage to occur, especially if the storm is particularly bad. If the storm has caused debris to break one of your windows, it is easy to panic, but try to remain calm. There are a few simple steps to follow if this is the case to help minimise the damage and keep your home as safe as possible.

If possible, you should try to board up the window. If you don't have any plywood boards already prepared, use any materials you have to hand to block the broken area, as this will avoid more rain getting in or the wind and debris causing further damage.

If you don't have any suitable materials or it isn't safe to try boarding up the window, a better solution is to do your best to seal off the whole room completely. Make sure the door is closed and wedge it shut as best you can so that the damage is contained to just one room of your house.

If you have blocked off the damaged area, still move to a safer space if you can. If one window has broken, it is possible that others might too, so try to stay away from rooms with lots of glass or windows. Your best option is to move to more internal rooms if possible, or ideally a space that doesn't have any windows, like a closet.
